A Week of Reading #1 [January 1st – January 7th] // Weekly 2020 Book Review

Trying to do individual book reviews for every single book I read in a year was proving to be impossible, so I’ve decided that I’ll do weekly wraps and mini book reviews instead! These are meant to give my quick thoughts about a book, my star rating, and other pertinent information. I’m looking forward to doing this series throughout the year!

Book One: The Governess Game by Tessa Dare (4 stars)

Woohoo! My first completed read of 2020 was a super solid historical romance by the amazing Tessa Dare. This follows Alexandra, a woman who makes her living from wounding clocks but ends up accidentally becoming the governess for the household of a rakish heir to a dukedom, who happens to believe he cannot properly love others because he himself does not deserve love. This is the second book in Dare’s Girl Meets Duke trilogy, and it definitely did not disappoint. There are also feminist themes woven into the material, so that’s always a huge plus!

Book Two: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (5 stars)

I have been telling myself to re-read the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series FOREVER, and #Demigodathon (a five week readathon happening now where we re-read the entire series, one book per week) finally inspired me to do so. The PJO series has been a favorite of mine since I picked up the first book a little over a decade ago at my middle school’s book fair. The first book follows Percy Jackson, a half-mortal/half-Greek god (demigod), who has been accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt. Knowing that he didn’t do it and that a war is brewing amongst the gods, Percy sets off on a quest with his friends Grover and Annabeth. This book is hilarious and witty, fast-paced, and also really emotional at times. It is a middle grade novel, but do not let that deter you if you are someone who is wary of or unfamiliar with the middle grade genre. I’m in my mid-20s, and I enjoyed it just as much as when I was in the 7th grade.

That’s it for this Week of Reading! Look out for my next one, which will be posted sometime next week! Let me know in the comments what books you read in the first week of 2020!
